The Great Saltee Islands
Fortunately, this year I was lucky enough to be able to visit The Saltee Islands to witness it’s magic in all it’s glory. The Saltee Islands are a vast breeding ground for the likes of Fulmars, Gannets, Shags, Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Razorbills, Grey Seals and of Course…the Stunningly beautiful Puffins. An area surrounding both the Islands and extending approx 1600ft off shore have the status of ‘Special Protection Area’ in order to protect the bird habitat.
I arrived in Kilmore Quay for the 11am Saltees Ferry which would then bring a group of 11 of us over to the Island. Approx 300m away from the shore, the ferry was stopped and we hopped onto a small rig which then brought us over to the shore. We all took off our boots, socks and rolled up our trousers where we then waded out through the seaweed onto the island.
There is a slight uphill walk to get to the Stone throne but nothing too extreme. Once at the throne, we turned right and straight I was hit by the Musical notes of all the beautiful birds on the cliffside. It was absolutely breathtaking. I must have taken at least a thousand photos. Just stunning!
All I can say is, if you have a chance to visit the Islands during bird season, do it! June is the ideal Month if you do decide to next year.
