Macro, Where have you been all my life!…

well, the title says it all. I’m in love with a lens called Myra. Macro Myra to be exact. She is wonderful and knows exactly what I want to shoot. She can be a little temperamental (like myself) and doesn’t particularly like any sudden movements but she is perfect!

While on our travels to Clare in July, We stopped into Whelan’s Cameras in Limerick. Every time we head down this neck of the woods, I pop in and treat myself to something nice whilst I try to convince myself that I deserve it. This time I decided to splash out on a Macro Lens and went with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. I had done a little research on Macro lenses before heading down but still, I wasn’t too sure what I was looking for. I was nervous to drop this amount on a new lens as to be fair, a lens like this is a pretty penny especially when deciding to dive nose right into the world of Macro for the first time.

The Guys in Whelan’s were fantastic to say the least. Their job has been made even more difficult due to the fact that as a result of Covid-19, they can’t allow customers to test the products before buying. I had never actually used the lens before, so I called on a lady I met via instagram (@m.f.nevin) to give me an honest opinion as I knew she had recently bought the same lens. Mary told be straight away to do it and I would never regret my purchase….and so I did.

I have the lens exactly 2 months today and I have never looked back. I had to option to either buy this lens or to buy a newer model camera, and I decided to go with the lens. I have the Canon 77D and I absolutely love it. It does everything I want and need it to do and so I felt an investment into another lens was the way to go for me. I know a lot of people would disagree with choosing a lens over a camera but it’s really a personal choice.

When I first started using the Macro lens, it took me a while to get used to it. There can literally be no movement at all when focusing on the subject. There’s times that I actually find myself holding my breath just to get that perfectly clear and focused shot. It has now become a part of me and me and Myra work well together lol.

So, if you are looking to invest in a new Macro lens, I would highly recommend the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM and the Guys from Whelan’s cameras in Limerick. xx

(Whelan’s also do a delivery service via their website. Additionally, for Dublin purchases I highly recommend Bermingham Cameras on Burgh Quay)
